Description / Background

The memorial is a timber honour roll located in a side chapel to the right of the altar within St Josephs Anglican Church in Eugowra. A simply designed Gothic shaped pediment tops the memorial, with decorative carved scrolls framing each side and a small carved shelf at the bottom. The memorial is dedicated to two young men who died in South Africa during the Boer War: Lance Corporal Edward C Chester who was killed at Elands River on 2 September 1900, and Corporal Alfred Allen who died of enteric fever at Pretoria on 18 October 1900.

The honour roll was dedicated on 27 January 1901 at a church service attended by members of the district. Prior to the service the Forbes Town Band lead a slow march to the church accompanied by members of the Mounted Rifles, the Bushmen's Contingent and the Army Medical Corps. The service was presided over by the Reverend W J Dunstan, and the memorial was unveiled by Mr R R Wise, the Attorney General. The memorial was erected by friends of the deceased in the Eugowra district (The Sydney Morning Herald, 29 January 1901).
