Veteran Notes/Bio

1. Not listed Bungendore War Memorial Hall WW 1 ROH (1917) but listed  Bygone Queanbeyan as "Hayes F (B)". Listed out of alphabetical sequence on the Bungendore War Memorial after "Lawless"(the bottom of the first column on the Enlisted & Returned ROH  that might suggest  it was a late inclusion on the ROH.

2." Mapping ANZACS" records 22 "Hayes F." and the AIF Project records a total of 16 of the former names. An examination of the NAA files for all these Diggers ,including POB,POE and Address of NOK would indicate that the only likely candidate for the "Hayes F ." on the Bungendore War Memorial is Francis Thomas Hayes 2166, 55 Battalion ( 7 {5%} of the Bungendore Enlisted & Returned ROH Diggers served in this Battalion). Francis was born in Cooma and was living in Bredbo at Enlistment. His NAA file does not provide any positive connection to the Bungendore District however the Queanbeyan Age 23.07.1915 under the heading of "Bungendore .Australia Day" : reported that Frank Hayes, among others , had donated a Pound towards the  Australia Day(fund). On balance it is considered that Francis Thomas Hayes is the "Hayes F."recorded on the Bungendore ROH.
