Description / Background

The memorial is a small park adjacent to Ungarie Memorial Swimming Pool. The park features a memorial gate and central bushrock memorial with plaque and accompanying flagpole. It is flanked by two low walls bearing multiple honour roll plaques listing those who have served from the district from the Boer War to the present.

In 1949 Bland Shire Council took action to establish a park at Ungarie. Local residents formed the Ungarie Park Committee, and three years later after persistent encouragement, Council agreed to planning the park, providing a cyclone fence for plantation purposes and installing water pipes. The Committee continued in their determination to develop the park in the three acres of land made available by Council (The West Wyalong Advocate, 23 June 1952).

By August 1953 a start had been made to establish the park. Working bees were held and Charles Burdack had prepared 120 trees on his property for planting. A sub-committee was formed to consider a swimming pool and a band stand, together with erecting memorial gates at the park entrance (The West Wyalong Advocate, 22 February 1954).

Further working bees were from mid 1954, with park equipment and the RSL Memorial Gates in Ungarie Street installed in November. The West Wyalong Advocate, 23 December 1954, published a detailed report on the progress of the park with two hundred trees now established, and congratulations were extended to the RSL for constructing the memorial gates to the Ungarie Street entrance.
