Description / Background

The ex-servicemen and -women of the Macarthur Gardens Retirement Village in Campbelltown can commemorate all the significant days of the calendar without being forced to leave their complex. The sandstone war memorial which was supported by local business stands approximately 1.2 metres and is 400mm thick. It sits on a concrete block 3 metres by 1 metre deep. On the right hand side is a plinth 900 by 600 mm for standing upon when commemorative services on Anzac Day and Remembrance Days are held on site.

Attached to the front of the sandstone memorial is a bronze plaque 300 by 200 mm with the words 'We Will Remember Them.' The plaque also has the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army (Rising Sun ) and Royal Australian Air Force badges, all cast in bronze.

The memorial is dedicated to all service personnel in all conflicts. Behind the memorial stands a 6 metre flagpole in the garden, planted with “Spirit of Anzac" grevilleas, “Veteran’s Honour” roses, “Macarthur” roses, rosemary and lavender, and it is surrounded by a flat grassy area.

In front of the memorial is a raised hilly area with a natural Australian bushland setting and a pathway leading down past the pond to two garden seats for quiet reflection. The pathway is lit up at night by solar operated bollard lights.

The dedication on 7 October 2015 included speeches, a welcome to country, the mounting of the catafalque party from the Australian Army, the RSL Corps of Guards from the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park and a performance of The Last Post by the Australian Army Band bugler.
