Description / Background

The Ungarie War Memorial Hall was opened on 31 March 1936. On site are multiple honour rolls, a room reserved for meetings of the Ungarie sub-Branch of RSL and photographs of soldiers who served, with details of their service.

Early in the 1930s the Ungarie War Memorial Building Committee was formed and initial moves were made in January 1934 to construct a memorial hall, with application for a loan and an appeal for donations (The West Wyalong Advocate, 26 January 1934). Progress was slow due the impact of the Great Depression, but in June 1935 the transfer of the land had been completed to commence the building of the hall (The West Wyalong Advocate, 7 June 1935).

Details of the cost of the building were published in the Sydney Morning Herald, 5 August 1936.

A grand ball was held to celebrate the official opening of the hall on 31 March 1936. The event was a great success, attended by over 500 residents from the district and surrounding towns, with music provided by the George Hall Band. Mr A W Stidwill carried out the duties of MC, and after supper Mr L N Johns was called upon to declare the hall officially open (The West Wyalong Advocate, 3 April 1936).

Outlined below are details of the Ungarie and District honour rolls for the Second World War found within the Ungarie Memorial Hall.

  • Ungarie Photographs - unveiled 9 November 1946 (The West Wyalong Advocate, 24 October 1946)
  • Ungarie War Memorial Honour Roll - unveiled 22 April 1949 by Mr T Webb, President of the Ungarie RSL (The West Wyalong Advocate, 28 April 1949)
  • Girral Honor Roll - unveiled 9 April 1948 at Girral by Warrant Officer H B Webster (The West Wyalong Advocate, 15 April 1948)
  • Kikoira Honor Roll - unveiled 9 March 1951 at the Kikoira Hall by Mr D Dickson, MLA (The West Wyalong Advocate, 15 March 1951).
