Lower Macleay Memorial Baths, Gladstone

The Lower Macleay Memorial Baths were officially opened on 23 November 1963 by the Macleay Shire Council President, Councillor D. J. O'Dell. At the time, the complex consisted of a 25 metre pool, a wading pool, dressing sheds, showers, and septic toilets. A detailed report of the opening was published in the Macleay Argus on 26 November. During the ceremony, Councillor O'Dell reminded the audience the swimming pool was a memorial pool and Mr Vince Craig, President of Lower Macleay RSL, read the Ode. 

The Lower Macleay Pool Committee provided the land for the facility and the construction cost £14,500. Funding came from a council donation, a State Government grant, and a loan. The community also raised money and a number of working bees were held throughout the project.

The pool was the result of a NSW Government policy to build some 70 pools across the state. They would not only provide venues for learn-to-swim programs but would act as monuments to those who had served in armed conflict, particularly during the Second World War.
