Description / Background

The memorial consists of three glass panels with words etched on both sides. On the left-hand side etched in glass “THE MARITIME SERVICES BOARD OF NSW” and the right-hand side “IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN ALL SERVICES, THEATRES AND WARS”. On the base has the words “LEST WE FORGET’.

The glass panels are approximately 75mm from the wall and when lit up, a 3D effect can be seen on the wall behind the area map. The map shows where Australian armed forces served in conflicts of war across Europe to South East Asia.

The memorial is located in the building's foyer. Several honour rolls are located nearby and on the first floor.

A brief history of the memorial

In 1989 the Maritime Service Board of NSW (M.S.B.) was renamed the Sydney Ports Authority and on 10 August 1991. Major Don Woodland of the Salvation Army dedicated a new M.S.B. war memorial at 207 Kent Street, Sydney.

On 2 December 2013, the new owners of 207 Kent Street advised the M.S.B. RSL Sub-Branch the memorial must be removed by 10 December 2013. The glass memorial was removed and placed into storage in the Glebe Island/Rozelle area, Sydney.

January 2017 saw meetings being held by the M.S.B. RSL Sub-Branch and the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) at the RMS head office to discuss if any possible permanent location could be found. In November 2017 the memorial and honour boards were installed in the R.M.S. office foyer, 33 James Craig Road, Rozelle.

The memorial was rededicated on 24 April 2018 by Lieutenant Carolyn O’Brien, from the Salvation Army. After the rededication was held, an Anzac Remembrance Service was held and the wreath laying ceremony held marked the 87th Anniversary of the first wreath laying ceremony held by the Sydney Harbour Trust Sub Branch in 1931.

In attendance there were members of the M.S.B. RSL Sub Branch, NSW Maritime, R.M.S. staff and staff from the Port Authority of NSW.
