St Stephen's Presbyterian Church Second World War Memorial Tablets, Warialda Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Warialda Standard on 24 May 1943 reported Mr and Mrs J. A. McGregor had received news their son John was a prisoner of war in a Malayan camp. Later that year, the Warialda Standard on 6 December 1943 reported Mrs M. Stevenson had received information her nephew, Charles Cruickshank was a prisoner of war in Java. On Sunday 27 March 1949, two marble tablets with inscriptions were dedicated to these soldiers in the Warialda Presbyterian Church, also known as St Stephen's. Reverend P. A. Smith from Penshurst joined Reverend R. MacArthur in the special morning service. Notes on veterans: Charles Conroy Cruickshank enlisted in the Australian Army on 2 July 1940 at Tamworth. As a Corporal in the 2/18th Australian Infantry Battalion, he died on 19 July 1943 of illness in Thailand and was buried in the Kanchanaburi Cemetery, Thailand. John Archibald McGregor enlisted in the Army on 30 September 1939 at Warialda. As a Corporal in the 2/18th Infantry Battalion, he died on 3 May 1945 of illness in Borneo.
