Served in the Australian Army - First Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF) in Gallipoli and France.
Joined the services as Private service no. 798 in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 47th Battalion.
Wounded in action in France on 10 June 1917 with gun shot wound to the left thigh and wrist.
Wounded in action a second time on 14 April 1918 and remained on duty.
Repatriated from Germany prisoner of war on 1 December 1918.
