Older brother of Auburn Memorial man 2639 Walter Douglas Paine. Captain Alfred Paine had a distinguished record of service of just short of four years in the AIF. He was a veteran of the South Africa (Boer) War and at 40 years of age he enlisted in the AIF on 17 March 1915, nominating his mother at 78 Station Road Auburn as his next-of-kin.
Alfred Paine was commission on Gallipoli where he served for four months. Allocated to the 18th Battalion, he moved to the Western Front where he served for 18 months in two sessions, broken by four months in Britain suffering from bronchitis. He was promoted to Captain in 1917 and in early 1919 he was OC of troops on the Plassey returning to Australia.
