Embarked Alexandria to join British Expeditionary Force, 28 May 1916; proceeding overseas to France ex Training Depot, Christchurch, England, 23 September 1916; marched into 2nd Australian Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, France, 25 September 1916; joined 2nd Australian Diviosnal Base Depot, 29 September 1916; attached to 7th Field Company Engineers, 11 December 1916; taken on strength of 7th Field Company Engineers, Field, 15 December 1916.

Found guilty, 24 March 1917, of (1) on 23 March 1917, when on active service drunkenness in that he was in a drunken condition: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No. 2; forfeited 28 days' pay.

On leave to England, 3 October 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 14 October 1917; with unit, 10 August 1918; on leave to the United Kingdom, 12 October 1918.

Admitted to Twynham War Hospital whilst on leave in the United Kingdom (influenza), Christchurch, 26 October 1918; discharged to Weymouth Command Depot, 4 November 1918.

Commenced return to on board HT 'Leicestershire', 9 December 1918; disembarked, Melbourne, 22 January 1919; discharged (medically unfit), Sydney, 18 May 1919.
