Contributed by Ron Inglis, October 2021:
Brickmaker George Derome, 23, was married to Kathleen May Derome of 46 Auburn Road, Auburn, and they had two children, George and Cecil.
Derome was one of many Auburn Memorial men who had signed up in the great surge of enlistment in Australia in July and August 1915. He embarked on the Suevic in December 1915.
In Egypt, Derome was posted to the 4th Battalion, which arrived in Marseilles, France on 30 March 1916. He was in and out of hospital for over a year (Scabies, influenza, Trench Feet), before he died of wounds on 6 October 1917 in the Third Battle of Ypres in Belgium, along with 13 other Auburn Memorial men.
Derome was buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery near the Belgian town of Poperinge. This cemetery contains 1,131 Australians out of 10,750 burials.
Derome’s name appears incorrectly on the Auburn War Memorial as Derome C. The correct Derome G appears on both the Lidcombe War Memorial and on the Auburn Municipality 1914-1919 Honour Roll.
George Derome is honoured on the following memorials in Australia:
