Pappinbarra Public School First World War Roll of Honour, Wauchope Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a distinctively shaped roll of honour for the First World War. The pediment features a painting of the first commonwealth Coat of Arms, flanked by the Union Jack and Australian flags. Delicate sprigs of Australian flora are also present in the design. The memorial was unveiled at the Pappinbarra School in early September 1917 by Mrs Monaghan, one of the district's oldest residents. It coincided with the opening of the new school building, for which a picnic and social was held on the grounds to mark the occasion (The Port Macquarie News, 8 September 1917). It is interesting to note the dates printed on the roll are 1914 to 1919, yet the roll was unveiled in 1917. It is possible the end year was added after the war. Pappinbarra School opened in July 1874 and was named a Public School from August 1893. It closed for a period, then re-opened in November 1905. After August 1931, it was known as Brombin School. The school officially closed in December 1965 and the roll is now held in storage at the Wauchope Historical Society Museum.
