Inscription AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S ARMY SERVICE1941 - 1947 To commemorate the service of the 24,028 members of the Australian Women's Army Service who volunteered and enlisted in the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces during World War II The AWAS with Colonel Sybil H. Irving, MBE as Controller served throughout Australia in all States and Territories, 386 of whom served also in New Guinea 1945-46. After previously serving only in the Medical and Nursing Services, women were trained and graded into 44 Army Trade groupings. Their dedication and outstanding commitment to the war effort released fit men to serve in forward areas. They performed vital duties serving their country with distinction and pride, fulfilling an important role in the defense of Australia. This plaque was dedicated on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the Service. We honour and remember them Lieutenant General Peter Cosgrove AC. MC.
