New South Wales Second World War Women's Services War Memorial Middle Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This memorial is in honour of Australian women who enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force, Australian Army, and Royal Australian Navy during the Second World War. It consists of a sandstone wall, with two sandstone plinths attached to the front. One plinth is the same height as the wall, while the other is low to the ground. Standing on the low plinth is a bronze statue of a young woman, hat in hand. On the wall to her left is a bronze relief depicting eight servicewomen and on the wall to her right are the three armed force badges, also in bronze. A number of plaques are attached to the memorial, including three for individual servicewomen. The memorial was dedicated on 16 February 1990 and the scupltor was Dennis Adams. Plaque below statue This statue epitomises the spirit of the young women of Australia as they enlisted in the three defence forces from 1939 to 1945 and faced an unknown future, taking up the challenge in the service of their country. Dedication plaque In commemoration of the service of the women of New South Wales who enlisted in Australia's defence forces during World War II 1939–1945. Unveiled by His Excellency Rear Admiral Sir David Martin, KCMG, AO Governor of New South Wales and dedicated on 16 February 1990. Plaque This memorial was made possible by the Wartime Servicewomen, their friends and ex-service organisations of New South Wales, the New South Wales government, the New South Wales Bicentennial Council and the Council of the City of Sydney.
