Struthers enlisted at Sydney, NSW. He was described on his enlistment form as being 5 foot 9 inches, of fair skin, with blue eyes and light brown hair. He had a weakened left shoulder as detailed in the Medical Report of an Invalid (Source: National Archives of Australia).
His appearance was also described by Lance Corporal D L Roberts in a statement about Struthers' death in an accidental mine explosion on a beach at El Arish, Egypt. The below excerpt of the statement is from page 4 of the Australian Red Cross Society Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau Files:
He was tall, fair, medium build, and had big scars on his arm from wounds received in Gallipoli. He and Squadron Sergeant-Major Shepherd went for a swim the first day we got to El Arish in December. I saw them a few seconds before a mine blew up and killed them instantly. I am quite sure it was Corporal Struthers. They were buried in the sand and a cross with their two names on it was erected.
