Description / Background

A sandstone pillar, surmounted by a statue of an Australian soldier with his hands resting on a reversed rifle. The memorial is mounted upon the traditional three steps. Immediately behind the statue, a sandstone platform features the three military badges of the Australian Defence Forces, Navy, Army and Airforce. Badges for the Merchant Navy and Australian Women's Services are also present. Three flag staffs complete the central memorial.

The names listed on this memorial are all NSW tramway employees who paid the supreme sacrifice in the First and Second World Wars.

In memory of our fellow comrades who laid down their lives for liberty and justice in the Great War of 1914 - 1919. Greater love hath no man than this; that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Plaque 1

Erected by the North Sydney Tramway staff unveiled 3rd November 1918.

Plaque 2

This plaque was unveiled by His Excellency Air Marshall Sir James Rowland KBE DFC AFC Governor of New South Wales to Commemorate the Rededication of the Memorial 7th March 1985.

Plaque 3

In commemoration of the service men and women of Australia and New Zealand who served together in all conflicts to uphold and keep the spirit of ANZAC alive and well for everyone. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
