6. By Bob Hoyer (Sutton) 13.11.2013:This photograph is inscribed on the back: "Yours sincerely No 790 Pte C.F. Hopkins C Coy 36 Battalion 9th Brigade A.I.F. France On active service." Charles Francis was born on 5 February 1896 to Ada Hopkins (Nee Compton) and christened Charles Francis Byrnes Hopkins - Byrnes being the surname of his biological father. He and his two younger brothers at the time were taken into care by the State on 12 July 1906 and all three were then taken under the guardianship of Bridget Crozier of Bungendore in 1909. The Electoral Roll of that time only shows a Bridget Cosier, the wife of Robert who was a blacksmith in Bungendore. While the two brothers were transferred to a family in Picton in 1912, Charles remained in Bungendore in the care of Farther Kenny. Charles worked for Mr F Leahy before moving to Barmedman to train as an auctioneer under Mr F Reid and it was from here he enlisted as one of “Carmichael’s Riflemen”. His mate from Barmedman, Harold white (900), with whom he enlisted was fatally wounded some months earlier.
