Cundle Oval Living Memorial Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background On Wednesday 11 July 1917, a meeting was held to make final arrangements for the planting of trees in Cundle Park in memory of enlisted soldiers from Cundle and the surrounding district who served in the First World War. Starting on Saturday 28 July 1917, volunteers helped council plant the avenue of camphor laurel trees in Market Square. This first day they had intended to plant 46 trees. The trees were numbered when planted and the name of a soldier was placed on each one. The names on each of the memorial trees have not survived. The Northern Champion, 1 August 1917, published the names of the soldiers. The planting of trees continued and by November 1918, 50 trees had been planted.
