Description / Background

This First World War roll of honor was unveiled on 25 July 1917, by Alderman W. A. Cramsie. Purchased in Sydney, it consists of a shield made of beaten copper, mounted on an oak backing board. Attached to the shield are several brass plates, inscribed with the dedication and names of those who served. The shield is richly decorated with embossed inscriptions, crossed swords, floral wreaths, cannons, and the Union Jack and Australian flags.

The Glen Innes Examiner, 26 July 1917, described the unveiling of the memorial, which took place in the Dundee Hall. At the time, there were 13 names inscribed, with six more names added at a later date.

The roll was subsequently moved to the Dundee Public School building. This building became known as the Dundee Community Hall, once the school closed.
