On 22 July 1941, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that:
Acting Wing-Commander Hughie Idwal Edwards, D.F.C., an Australian member of the Royal Air Force, has been awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring leadership of a raid on Breman on 4 July.
Two years later, on 1 January 1943, the Western Australian reported he had been awarded the Distinguished Service Order and was now the most highly decorated Australian airman in two wars. The report also stated he joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1935 and was one of seven Australians selected for further training with the Royal Air Force.
