Lt Cantello Reserve and HMAS Kuttabul Honour Roll Middle Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This memorial reserve commemorates Lt George Cantello of the United States Army Air Force (U.S.A.A.F.) who died in 1942 when his aircraft crashed on takeoff from Bankstown while attempting to locate a Japanese submarine that was shelling eastern Sydney. It was dedicated on 12 June 1988. In the reserve is a stone wall with two plaques relating to Cantello. They were unveiled on 12 June 1988. Also on the wall is an honour roll plaque commemorating the sinking of HMAS Kuttabul during the midget submarine attack in Sydney Harbour. It was dedicated on 31 May 1992. Dorrance Consul General of the United States of America to commemorate the dedication of this memorial to 1st LT. George Leo Cantello 0-3888 USAAF Commander, 41st fighter squadron, 35th fighter group, who gave his life nearby on 8th June, 1942 in the defence of Sydney. Alderman C. R. Conway J.P. Mayor. D. W. Lt Cantello plaque 2 Lest We Forget Cantello (1915 -1942) In the early hours of 8th June, 1942, Lt. Cantello took off in his P-39 Bell Airacobra fighter plane from Bankstown Aerodrome in response to the shelling of Sydney by a Japanese submarine lying of the coast. For undetermined reasons, the aircraft crashed near this memorial shortly after takeoff, killing Lt. Cantello instantly. Liverpool City Council with the support of the 5th Air Force Memorial Foundation, The Flying School Class 40-A Association, The American Battle Monuments Comission has erected this memorial in Australia's bicentennial year as a permanent reminder of Lt Cantello's sacrifice and the contribution made to the defence of Australia by the United States Armed Forces during World War II. He gave his life for liberty. HMAS Kuttabul Honour Roll Liverpool City Council This plaque was unveiled on Sunday, 31st May 1992 by Mark Latham Mayor. Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Kuttabul - 31st May 1942. Kuttabul, was sunk in Sydney Harbour, at 2300 hours on the 31st of May 1942 during the Japanese Midget Submarine attack, with the loss of 21 lives.
