'This N.C.O. was in charge of bearer squads at an exposed Collecting Post at HOOGE TUNNEL. During the attack on POLYGON WOOD on 26th September 1917, he was continuously on duty supervising the change of Bearer Relays. During this duty he displayed great courage and devotion to duty under very heavy shell fire. By his courageous example and devotion to duty and disregard of personal safety, he prevented congestion and helped to save the lives of many wounded. His work throughout the whole operations was a splendid example to all ranks.'
