Description / Background

There are several memorials outside Strathfield Council Chambers. The focal point is a brown marble monument surmounted by an iron globe, dedicated to those who served in the First World War. It was unveiled on 11 October 1925. A dedication plaque is mounted on the wall of the Council Chambers nearby. There are flagpoles on each side of the monument.

A First World War honour roll is attached to the wall of the Council Chambers directly behind the monument. The roll was on site at the time of the unveiling of the monument.

To the right of the monument is a grey marble seat, in honour of those who fell in the Second World War. A dedication is inscribed in the seat back, and the memorial is surrounded by shrubs.

Notes on veterans' names:

  • No records can be found for deceased veterans from this area with the following names: E R Nott, W Perkin, E T Rabone, E C Uther. Their status codes have been left as 'Killed in action' (KIA), as that is what is suggested by the memorial.
  • E C Uther could be either Frank Uther or Gordon Arthur Uther.
  • All other status codes have been taken from information provided by the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour and Commemorative Roll, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database, and records in the National Archives of Australia.
  • On the memorial:
    • J A Ireland is given as A Ireland.
    • J W Begnell served under the name of Gorman.
