Crookwell First World War Trench Mortar Middle Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The mortar was originally located at the old memorial gates entrance to the park. It was moved from the gates in 1953 to Apex Park and then to Grange Playing Grounds where it was placed in a tree strip and fell into disrepair. There were originally two mortars, however one has since been misplaced. In 2009, the Crookwell Historical Society decided to move the remaining mortar to the site of the Crookwell War Memorial. Mr Bev Hatch was commissioned to restore the mortar. After considerable effort by Mr Hatch, the mortar was dedicated on Anzac Day 2010. Inscription This German Trench Mortar was captured by the 18th Battalion, AIF, in the Warfusee - Framerville Sector, Battle of Amiens, 8th to 11th August 1918. Crookwell Servicemen with the 18th Battalion at that time were: R Craig; W J Hone MM; R S Isaac; E C Keith; T A McGuirk; K McKenzie; H H Murphy; T A Nelligan; R J Reynolds.
