Alderman Whereat First World War Roll of Honour, Tenterfield Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This paper honour roll lists the names of 46 veterans who served in the First World War. Their names are handwritten within a table that had been pre-printed on the page, with columns for name and rank. This style of roll is a template design, allowing for a memorial to be created efficiently and possibly with minimal cost. The page is decorated at the top with a printed illustration, featuring symbols representing military service and the British Empire. These include Britannia holding a laurel wreath, a soldier and sailor, the Union Jack and Australian flags, and the First Commonwealth Coat of Arms. The history of the roll is unknown. Based on the inscription at the bottom, it is clear it was presented by Alderman Edward William Whereat of Tenterfield, but the recipient and date of the gift are not identified. This roll is one of three matching memorials for the war, all using the same paper template, and presented in similar timber frames. The other two are listed separately on the NSW War Memorials Register as the East Tenterfield Progress Association First World War Roll of Honour and the Mayor Alderman Kneipp First World War Roll of Honour, Tenterfield. All three rolls are now located in the RSL Pavilion of the Tenterfield and District Soldiers Memorial Hall. Do you know more about this war memorial?
