Description / Background

The Attunga War Memorial is a formal set of gates, located at the entrance to Attunga War Memorial Park. The gates consist of four brick pillars, with two taller pillars in the centre and two shorter pillars on either side. A decorative arch spans the central pillars and contains the name of the memorial in metal letters. Hanging from these pillars are two wrought iron gates. Two smaller pedestrian gates, of similar design, hang from the smaller pillars. The central gates also feature a Rising Sun motif, incorporated into the metalwork.

A granite honour roll is attached to the right-hand side central pillar. It is inscribed with the names of men and women from Attunga and district who served in the First and Second World Wars and Vietnam. The roll is encased in a glass box for protection.

This significant site in Attunga was officially opened by the Rt. Hon. Ian Sinclair MP on 25 April 1998. It has been a place of remembrance for the surrounding district for at least the last 30 years, and has had a memorial service at 3pm every Anzac Day for at least the same period. The ceremony is attended by ex-service personnel, the local school, community members, and the Scottish pipe band from Tamworth. It is always followed by a public afternoon tea at the Attunga Hall.
