Description / Background

The memorial is a timber honour roll commemorating 24 members of the Blue Knob Rifle Club who served in the First World War. Blue Knob is a small village located seven kilometres north of Nimbin.

The honour roll has strong architectural features with a four layered timber shelf at the top, a timber shelf at the bottom, and carved columns on each side. The names of seven servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War are written in gold lettering at the top of the board, with the names of an additional 17 servicemen from the Rifle Club listed below.

The Northern Star, 11 March 1922, reported that permission had been granted to hang an honour roll in the Blue Knob Public School. The school was established as a Provisional School in October 1914 and closed in December 1965. It is uncertain whether this honour roll was that of the Rifle Club as described above.

The Blue Knob hall was established in 1930 below Lillian Rock and Blue Knob. Numerous social occasions were held in the hall, but over time it fell into disrepair. Community members provided voluntary labour to renovate the building and the hall, and the artist-run Blue Knob Hall Gallery and Café was officially opened in 2004.

The honour roll is on display in the Blue Knob Hall Gallery and Café.
