Description / Background

The Nimbin District Great War Memorial consists of a decorative pillar, surmounted by a broken column. It was erected in honour of those who fought, died or were wounded in the First World War. Plaques are attached to the sides inscribed with the dedication and an honour roll.

A War Memorial Committee was formed in Nimbin after the war. Early in June 1920 some 60 residents attended a public meeting held in the School of Arts to discuss the erection of a memorial in honor of those who volunteered for active service from Nimbin and the surrounding districts. The Northern Star (Lismore), 5 June 1920 reported that the Rev. A.G. Moore proposed that a cottage hospital be erected, which was seconded by Mr Fredericks. Mr W. Runn (A.I.F.) moved as an amendment that a monument be erected in the middle of the town, to be donated for the purpose. This was carried and a committee of four residents was elected to obtain plans, specifications and prices.

At a later meeting of the executive of the Committee held late in November, and reported in the Star on 16 December 1920, it was revealed that 150 pounds had been given and promised and further donations would be accepted. Relatives of those who had volunteered within several miles radius were asked to forward all names so that none were missed. The treasurer was asked to arrange for the immediate erection of the monument.

In the Star on 30 May 1921, an article appeared about the Empire Day celebrations held on 26 May, at which residents observed the unveiling of the monument. Representatives came from the surrounding localities of Wadeville, Blue Knob, Coffee Camp and Lismore. Mr Pedrian M.L.A. and Councillor W.P. stranger representing Terania Shire also attended.
