The Channon First and Second World War Memorial Gates Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Channon First and Second World War Memorial Gates consists of a square arch, with two honour roll tablets attached to the pillars. The arch is made out of bricks and concrete and the tablets are marble. The lintel beam of the arch bears the Rising Sun emblem of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces and the words 'The Great War'. The tablets list the names of veterans from both the First and Second World Wars. The gates were originally dedicated on 17 July 1927. The President of the Terania Shire Council, Councillor T W Green, gave a speech and Mrs J Watt, mother of one of the fallen, performed the unveiling. The ceremony was followed by a religious service conducted by the Reverend C Foley (Church of England) and the Reverend P A Williams (Methodist). The occasion was documented in the Northern Star on 19 July, including two photographs of the finished gates. The gates were rededicated in honour of those who served in the Second World War in late April 1950. The President of the Legion, Mr Roy Herne, read out the eight names of those who fell in the war. Reverend Smith offered the prayer of dedication and Mr C Towns recited 'We will remember them'. The tablets were unveiled by Mrs E G Standing and Mrs Mooney. The ceremony was followed by a service held in The Channon Hall, directly behind the gates (Northern Star, 2 May 1950).
