Description / Background

This roll of honour is a dark timber board, edged with simple timber moulding. It lists 21 ex-pupils of Bryan's Gap Public School who served in the First World War. Their names are neatly printed in gold, out of alphabetical order, down the central panel.

The roll was made by local residents Mr Ballard and his daughter. It was unveiled at the school on 14 June 1916 and the ceremony was described in detail in The Tenterfield Star the following day. The article included the names of all the former students from the district who had enlisted. At that stage, 12 names were already on the roll, and it was estimated 10 more were to be added. The unveiling was performed by the Mayor of Tenterfield, Alderman Stewart. He said the roll was the first war memorial in the district.

Bryan's Gap Public School opened in December 1875 and closed in December 1946. The roll is now located in the RSL Pavilion of the Tenterfield and District Soldiers Memorial Hall. It is available for viewing during opening hours.
