Bungawalbyn and Swan Bay District Second World War Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a simple timber honour roll for the Second World War. It features a classical pediment at the top and carved columns on either side. The alphabetical list of names is printed in gold, across two columns, in the centre of the board. Only one veteran, Lance Corporal Patrick Francis Brady, is marked as killed in action with a gold asterisk. Planning for the memorial began in 1946, when the Bungawalbyn* Swan Bay District Welcome Home Committee decided it was time to install an honour roll in the Bungawalbyn Memorial Hall, as all the district's soldiers had returned (Northern Star, 31 July 1946). The committee met again in October to further the work. The roll was finally unveiled at a "Grand social" at the hall, held on Wednesday, 19 March 1947 (Northern Star, 8 March 1947). As community halls closed throughout the district, honour rolls were moved to the former Woodburn Shire Council Chambers. In time, the chambers became the home of the Mid-Richmond Historical Society Museum, also known as the Coraki Museum. The society received funding from Richmond Valley Council to restore the roll in 2015 (Northern Star, 9 Dec 2015). Access to it is restricted to the opening hours of the museum. * Note: Bungawalbyn was also spelt Bungawalbin.
