Canley Heights Cenotaph

The Canley Heights Cenotaph includes several elements:

• A sandstone cenotaph faced with treated slabs of Balmoral red granite. On the apex is a bronze torch and flame. The whole sits on a two-stepped sandstone base. The lower sections of the each side on the cenotaph support bronze insignias of the Australian Military Forces: Royal Australian Navy, Australian Merchant Navy, and Royal Australian Air Force. On the top section of the obelisk is the bronze insignia of the Returned & Services League (RSL) of Australia.
• An infantry support mobile 4-inch mortar. It saw service in New Guinea during in the Second World War, and was restored by RSL members.
• Three steel flagpoles. 
• Two stone walls featuring bronze plaques, inscribed with the names of members of the Canley Heights RSL Sub-Branch who have died since 1979.

The cenotaph was originally erected in nearby St John’s Park. It was unveiled in 1920 thanks to the financial contributions made by the local cycling and tennis clubs, as well as the St John’s community plus members. The cenotaph was re-dedicated in 2001.

Notes on veteran names:

• No record can be found for an E. W. Atkins of this area dying in the First World War. Therefore the status code for this veteran has been left as indicated on the memorial.
• The status codes for all other veterans who died during the First World War have been taken from information given on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour and the National Archives.
• On this memorial C. Snow is given as C. Show. This is a mistake which has been carried over since the original inscriptions were made.
• ‘Wakely’ should read ‘Wakeley’.
