Clunes Methodist Church First World War Roll of Honor Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This honour roll is for members of the Clunes Methodist Church who served in the First World War. The board is a solid construction, made of a dark timber. It is richly decorated with brightly coloured paintings. At the top is the First Commonwealth Coat of Arms, with a delicate floral border. There is also an open book, possibly a religious text, and two men carrying the Union Jack and Australian flags. One man is depicted as a soldier, the other as a sailor. Planning for the memorial was underway by early 1916. On 10 January, the Northern Star reported on a meeting of the Clunes Methodist Circuit held on 6 January. Records were being made of those who had enlisted in the war, and the meeting decided to erect a roll in the church building at Clunes. The roll was designed by Mr T. Campbell, an ex-teacher of nearby Eltham Public School. It was made by Brown and Jolly, furniture makers of Lismore, and the decorations were completed by Mr J. Collings, also from Eltham Public School. The unveiling ceremony took place at the Clunes Coronation Hall on 12 March 1916. The special service was led by Reverend R. J. Thomas and included a musical selection from the choir and an organist. The occasion was reported in the Star a month later on 12 April. The article listed the 20 names on the board at the time of its unveiling. As needed, more names were added, bringing the eventual total to 47 names. The memorial is located on the west wall inside the Clunes Uniting Church. It is available to view during opening hours.
