Eltham District Second World War Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Eltham District Second World War Honour Roll is a polished timber board, decorated with full colour paintings. Within the pediment are a crown flanked by the Union Jack and Australian Red Ensign and in the bottom corners are two more Union Jack's that are oval in shape. Two carved columns topped with urns complete the piece. The names of the men and women who served are printed in gold across three panels in the centre of the board. The secretary of the memorial committee, Mr A.G. Dawes, advertised in the Northern Star (Lismore), 13 September 1947 that a meeting would be held in the Eltham Hall on Monday 15 September to make final arrangements for the unveiling of the roll. It was decided the ceremony would be held on Thursday 9 October at 8pm. The event was described in detailed in the Star on 16 October. The article stated that a large gathering assembled in the Eltham Hall to witness the occassion, which included various solos, recitations and music provided by the Virtue Orchestra. Councillor Mr C.B. Gray presided and Mr Dawes spoke of the activities of the Civic Fund, which included organising farewells, Christmas presents and welcome home events for service people. Mr G.H. Pearson, former President of the Civic Fund, performed the official unveiling. Two minutes silence was observed for Ronnie Alexander and Geoff Dickie who had been killed and whose names appear on the roll. Reverend Miller then performed the dedication. Certificates of Service were also presented to enlisted men from Gundurimba Shire. Inscription For Faith and DutyEltham District Honour Roll 1939 1945[Names]God save the King.
