Description / Background

The memorial is a polished timber honour roll dedicated to those from Eungai and the surrounding district who served in the Second World War. The memorial features a distinctive pediment with the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces emblem displaying the rising sun and crown. Turned timber columns frame each side of the honour roll with a carved supporting shelf at the bottom. A timber shield is mounted in the centre of the honour roll containing the dedication and 76 veterans names listed alphabetically in four columns, all printed in gold lettering. A leaf design painted in gold decorates either side of the honour roll shield.

A metal plaque is attached at the bottom of the shield engraved with the service details of Ronald Wesley Whalen, the local craftsman and Second World War veteran who designed and created the memorial. Whalen, was born at Macksville in 1922 and enlisted in the AIF on 21 January 1942 at Kempsey. He was discharged on 16 May 1946 as a Private in the 2nd Field Ambulance. He also served as a Gunner in the 5th Heavy Brigade Royal Australian Regiment.

Eungai is a rural community on the mid-North coast of NSW located west of the coastal village of Stuarts Point. The roll is located in the Stuarts Point Workers Recreation and Bowls Club, where it is available for viewing during Club opening hours.
