Description / Background

This war memorial is a timber honour roll for ex-pupils of the former Guyra Public School who served in the First World War. It is made of Queensland maple and features a classically designed pediment, with carved edges. There are also carved columns on the left and right sides of the board and a small shelf at the top and bottom of the piece. The names of 36 ex-pupils are printed in gold lettering, across two columns.

In June 1925, the school's Parents and Citizens Association resolved to erect an honour roll in the school. It was necessary to raise some £20 and contributions were asked to be paid to the head teacher, Mr H. Macrara (Guyra Argus, 11 June 1925).

The roll was unveiled at the school later that year on Armistice Day,11 November, by Lieutenant-Colonel H. F. White. Mr H. E. Shaw president of the P. and C. also spoke on the occasion. The event was reported in the Guyra Argus on 24 November. At the time of the unveiling, the board contained 29 names, eight of whom were marked as killed in action.

The Guyra Public School was open from July 1883 until December 1943. In 1944, the school became part of the Guyra Central School. The roll is located in the school's library. It is available for viewing when the school is open..
