Glenorie First World War Honour Roll Middle Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial board is made of wood, approximately 3 feet wide and 2 feet 6 inches tall, and lists thirty First World War veterans from the Glenorie area. Their names are highlighted with gold lettering. The board is mounted high on the left-hand side interior wall of the Glenorie Memorial Hall. In the publication Glenorie Public School Centenary and District History 1888-1988 published by the Glenorie Public School (Centenary Book Committee), of which copies can be found in the Hills Shire Library, there is a photograph showing this memorial board mounted above the main entrance doorway at one of the first functions being held in the Hall in 1933. The publication states, “The names of servicemen from Glenorie, who enlisted during the wars, are displayed on wall-mounted wooded Roll of Honour plaques, inside the Glenorie Memorial Hall.” The hall is located on the eastern side Old Northern Road, which is the boundary of the Hills and Hornsby Shire Councils. The veterans listed were either born, lived or attended schools from either shire. Notes of veteran names: Eight of the veterans listed died during the First World War conflict. There is a photograph mounted below the memorial board of six of the veterans listed at a send-off of local recruits, taken on 11 March 1916. Four never returned. The veterans are George Dale (KIA 04/04/1918), Thomas Dale (RTA 13/06/1919), Donald Ray (POW) (DofD 10/01/1919), William Rae (KIA 08/08/1918), Roy Roberts (KIA 04/12/1917) and Henry Walker (RTA 31/05/1919). Eight of the thirty veterans listed on the memorial board are unable to be traced or identified with confidence with links to the area using data held in the Australian Imperial Force Project and the National Archives of Australia databases. The thirty veterans listed are also listed on the honor roll monument, located adjacent to the Hall in Wal Buckingham Memorial Garden.
