Description / Background

The Iluka Soldiers' Memorial Hall is a simple weatherboard building with gabled roof and is typical of community halls built at the time. The hall is located on a site originally set aside for a School of Arts, adjacent to the Memorial Park and Cenotaph on the riverside of Charles Street, Iluka.

It was built by a Mr Chapman, with assistance from local residents, in honour of the local men who fought in the Great War. Money to build the hall was raised by the local community; it cost $680.00 (£340). It was officially opened on 5 October 1923 by Cr R Collis of Harwood Shire Council.

Several additions have been added to the building. In the 1940s, two small rooms to function as a ticket booth and a projection room were added to the front of the hall. In 1965, to the right side of the hall, a supper room with kitchen facilities and separate entrance porch for use by the Iluka Branch of the Country Women's Association (CWA) was added. There is also a flagpole mounted on the front exterior wall of the hall, above the entrance.

Since construction, the hall has been managed by local residents acting as Trustees. However, in recent years the Clarence Valley Council has taken over maintenance of the building and in 2011, agreed to allow the Iluka History Group to share the use of the building with RSL and CWA. Since around 2013, the group has been busy setting up the Iluka Museum in the hall, which now has a display featuring local war memorabilia as part of their exhibition.

The Chatsworth-Iluka Branch of the RSL has also used the hall facilities every year following the local Anzac and Remembrance Day Services.

The museum is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am till 1pm.
