Knockrow Second World War Plane Disaster Memorial Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial consists of a masonry block plinth with a short obelisk on top. The blocks have been painted white. Attached to the front face of the obelisk is a bronze plaque, which explains the circumstances of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) crash on 22 May 1944 at Knockrow. The plane was flying from Brisbane to Evans Head Air Base. The servicemen were born in Queensland and came from the RAAF airbase training establishment. The monument was created and maintained by the RAAF Association, Ballina Branch. Many Australian newspapers published brief details of the crash and listed the names of the servicemen including their service details. Inscription Plaque 1 In memory of four Brisbane members of the R.A.A.F. who lost their lives when their plane crashed near this spot whilst flying from Brisbane to Evans Head 22.5.1944. Buried at Evans Head War Cemetery. Flight Lieutenant Ernest Allan Shackell (29); Flying Officer Trevor Llewellyn Woodgate (26); Warrant Officer Edmund James Kiely Ahern (26) and Sergeant Gordon Hill (21).
