Description / Background

A memorial avenue of Kurrajong Trees was originally planted by the Narromine Municipal Council along Dandaloo Street from 1917, in honour of the servicemen who fell in the First World War.

The trees were removed in 1934-35 to allow the surface to receive a bitumen seal. The centre islands were added later. In 2018 the Kurrajong Trees were removed and replaced by Manchurian Pear Trees as part of the Main Street Enhancement Program.

A plaque attached to a sandstone plinth is now located outside the Narromine Council Chambers in Dandaloo Street. It traces the development of the memorial avenue from Kurrajongs to Manchurian Pear Trees. It also includes the emblems of the Council and Returned Services League, Australia. The plaque was unveiled on 30 August 2020 by the Narromine Shire Mayor Craig Davies and Narromine RSL sub-Branch president Neil Richardson.

An avenue of Kurrajong Trees was planted by Narromine Municipal Council along Dandaloo Street, commencing in 1917, and added to over the following decades. They were originally from the Scout Hall to Hargraves Corner as a memorial to the servicemen who lost their lives in World War 1.

The avenue of trees was extended along the southern side of Dandaloo over the trees.

In 1924 the Cenotaph was constructed to honour the servicemen who died in World War 1.

In 1934/35 the Department of Main Roads removed the Kurrajong Trees on the northern side of the railway line in Dandaloo Street to bitumen seal the road. This was done in two strips. The centre island garden was added later.

In 2018 the Kurrajong Trees on the southern side of the railway line were removed by Narromine Shire Council and replaced with Manchurian Pear Trees, a much more suitable street tree, as part of the Main Street Enhancement Program.
