Description / Background

The Lawrence Public School First World War Roll of Honor is a decorative board made of Queensland maple. It features paintings of the Union Jack, the Australian Red Ensign and a laurel wreath. The names of 37 ex-pupils of the school who served in the war are neatly printed in gold across two columns, down the centre of the board.

The memorial was unveiled at the school on 25 May 1918. The event was reported in the Daily Examiner on 31 May. The chair was occupied by Mr J. Harrison, Vice President of the Parents' Association. Addresses were given by Councillor J. Parsons, President of the Harwood Shire; Pastor Hockey; and Mr A. Miles. The pupils sang a number of hymns and the unveiling was performed by Mr W. T. Fraser, Inspector of Schools.

The memorial is now located in the Lawrence Literary Institute Hall and is available for viewing during social functions held on site.
