Description / Background

The memorial is a timber honour roll commemorating the young men from the Lawsons Creek district, many of them ex-pupils of Lawsons Creek Public School, who enlisted in the First World War.

The honour roll, made by Mr Herbert Mogg, is described in the Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, 30 November 1916, as 'a handsome cedar tablet, relieved in facings of white holly. It is beautifully designed and excellently executed.’ The tablet is surmounted by the Imperial Coat of Arms and the initials A I F. The names of the men honoured on the board are written in gilt lettering.

The honour roll was unveiled in the Lawsons Creek Public School on 25 November 1916 by Mr W E James, M A, District Inspector of Schools. Some 200 residents attended the unveiling ceremony with guests including many prominent townsmen including the Mayor of Mudgee, Mr L Cohen, the Mayor of Cudgegong, Mr E Hughes, Alderman V D Cox (Cudegong), and Rev William Spence of St Paul's Presbyterian Church, Mudgee. At the time of the unveiling there were 17 names listed on the memorial, an additional five names were added at a later date (Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, 30 November 1916).

Lawsons Creek Public School was opened in 1868 and closed in June 1948. The honour roll is now located in the Mudgee Museum.
