Lockhart and District Great War Honor Roll

This impressive honour roll is for the people of Lockhart and district who served in the First World War. It is a substantial timber board, made of blackwood, and features elegant carvings. The pediment is decorated with the Rising Sun emblem of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces, which is flanked by two flags and eucalyptus branches. The body of the board includes four turned columns and three garlands, possibly representing laurel boughs. 

The roll lists more than 250 names of those who served in the war, including two nursing sisters. Fifty-eight names are listed in the centre panel of the board, under the heading 'In memoriam', indicating they made the supreme sacrifice. This panel has been carved to resemble a paper scroll, further highlighting these veterans. 

The memorial was unveiled at the Lockhart School of Arts on Anzac Day, 25 April 1924. The ceremony was reported in The Albury Banner and Wodonga Express on 9 May. The unveiling was performed by Mr Walter Day, Mr R. S. Drummond, and Mr T. Bond. Mrs J. F. Rawson also placed a wreath of flowers underneath the board. 

The roll remains in the hall, now known as Lockhart Memorial Hall, and access to view it is by appointment/tour. Also on site is the Loyal Lockhart Lodge M.U.I.O.O.F. No. 209 First World War Honour Roll. The names on the Lodge roll also appear on this district roll. 

In 2017, a grant was received from the Federal Government under the 'Saluting their Service Commemorative Grants Program', which was used to refurbish the board. It was unveiled on 18 September 2017 by the Member for Riverina, the Hon Michael McCormack MP. A media release issued by Mr McCormack to mark the occasion stated:

More than 30 people from around Lockhart Shire attended the ribbon cutting ceremony, including descendants of the soldiers on the board.

Mr McCormack said it was essential we continued to preserve our war history so future generations could appreciate the freedoms they have today.

"Lockhart is a town which gave so much not just for World War I, not just for World War II, but indeed all conflicts that Australia has been involved in," Mr McCormack said.

"It's important that we remember (the sacrifices of our soldiers); it's more important that we keep them preserved so the future generations can know."
