Mayor Alderman Kneipp First World War Roll of Honour, Tenterfield Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a paper honour roll for the First World War. It is inscribed with the names of 46 veterans who served in the war, with three marked as killed in action. Their names and ranks have been handwritten within the rows of a table that has been pre-printed on the page. This style of roll is a template design, allowing for a memorial to be created efficiently and possibly with minimal cost. The page is decorated at the top with a printed illustration, featuring symbols representing military service and the British Empire. These include Britannia holding a laurel wreath, a soldier and sailor, the Union Jack and Australian flags, and the First Commonwealth Coat of Arms. The history of the roll is unknown. The inscription at the bottom clearly states it was presented by Mayor Alderman Frederick Kneipp of Tenterfield, but the recipient and date of the gift are not identified. Kneipp was Mayor of the town during the war years. This roll is one of three matching memorials for the war, all using the same paper template, and presented in similar timber frames. They are all now located in the RSL Pavilion of the Tenterfield and District Soldiers Memorial Hall. The two other rolls are listed separately on the NSW War Memorials Register as the Alderman Whereat First World War Roll of Honour, Tenterfield and the East Tenterfield Progress Association First World War Roll of Honour.
