The below is an excerpt from Soldier-Teacher War Memorials, World War I - World War II - Post World War II, by Tom Spencer, June 2001: The 15 September 1997 edition of Education carried the following notice: Special Ceremony NSW Department has prepared an Honour Board to commemorate Departmental officers who have served abroad with the armed forces... (1946-1976). A ceremony to dedicate the Honour Board will be held ... on Wednesday, 24 September at 5:30p.m. This report on the ceremony was printed in the 27 October edition of the paper: A Roll of Honour has been dedicated to Department of School Education Officers who served in Vietnam, New Guinea, Malaya, Korea, Japan and Crete. The Roll of Honour has been places on public display with the World War I and World War II honour boards at the Department...building in Bridge Street... Director-General of School Education Dr Ken Boston said the memorial had been suggested by former Federation president, Phil Cross. "I'm very pleases he had the vision for the creation of this board", Dr Boston said. Room has been left on the honour board so names can be added when the Department becomes aware of the Departmental Officers who served in... theatres of war. Teachers Sub-Branch, RSL President Geoff Falkenmire said the honour board was the culmination of a great deal of work. In enthusiastically supporting Phil Cross's concept, the Director-General, Dr Boston, together with the Teachers Sub-Branch, RSL has achieved another important stage in the proper recognition of war service undertaken by employees of the Department.
