Orange East Public School Great War Roll of Honor Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Orange East Public School Great War Roll of Honor is a decorative pressed copper plate, faced with individual brass name plates. The whole is attached to a timber backing board. It was unveiled on 6 September 1919 by Mr. P. Board, Director of Education. The monument was manufactured by the Wundelich Company in Sydney, who provided a stylised memorial with small plaques that could be personalised and attached. The centre section allowed the organisation to provide its own information; in this case, dedicated to the old pupils of the school. At the top it features Australian gum nuts, the Australian flag and Union Jack, two crossed swords, two cannons and a small cross at the bottom, as well as decorative scroll work. The Leader (Orange), 3 February 1919 stated that the school had decided to erect a "handsome" honour roll. The Headmaster Mr Caldwell, sought names of those who had attended the school and were serving overseas. Five months later, The Leader, 25 June 1919 reported that a fair number of names had been received. Shortly after, The Leader, 30 July 1919 reported that Mr Caldwell had expressed interest in purchasing the Wunderlich design and that because each name was to cost three shillings and six pence, locals were contributing to the cost. A detailed report of the unveiling was published in The Leader, on 8 September. Following the speeches and the unveiling of the monument, an adjournment was made to Newman Park where the East Orange Public School Memorial Avenue was planted by relatives of fallen soldiers and school children.
