Orange Railway Ambulance and Rifle Club First World War Roll of Honour

The Orange Railway Ambulance and Rifle Club First World War Roll of Honour is a carved timber board, listing the names of employees of the Orange railways who served in the war. It has a heavily moulded pediment and is decorated with a painted red cross and white circle. The board also has supporting timber columns on either side and small supporting shelves at the top and bottom. The names of those who served are listed in rank order, with Captain Milne at the top followed by Lieutenant Boles, Sergeant J.A. Earls and then the Privates.

The memorial was created by the Orange Railway Ambulance and Rifle Club, also known as the Railways Institute. The formation of the club was gazetted in 1907. It was initiated by Captain Milne and had 57 members by the time the club was approved by the Chief Commissioner (The Sydney Mail, 22 May 1907; Goulburn Evening Penny Post, 25 July 1907). According to the Leader, 11 February 1915, the club's growth was one of the largest in the western district and it was "expected that shortly every railway employee in Orange would be a rifleman."

The honour roll was due to be unveiled on 21 July 1916 by Commissioner Frazer. However, his train broke down earlier in the week and his tour of the region had to be abandoned. It instead took place one month later, on 26 August. Assistant Commissioner E. Milne performed the unveiling, in front of a crowd including riflemen, militia, parents of soldiers listed on the roll, as well as the general public. Mr C. James, Superintendent of Lines, chaired the event and spoke at length about the mixed feelings of sadness and pride associated with the unveiling of a war memorial. Orange's Lord Mayor was also present on the day, representing the citizens at the ceremony (Leader, 21 July 1916; 28 August 1916).

The roll is attached to a brick wall at Orange Station, underneath the main canopy, facing the platform. The site lies within the heritage listing boundary of the Orange Railway Station and Yard Group.
