Description / Background

The memorial is in the form of a banded column, surmounted by a carriage lamp. The column, now repaired and painted white, was originally cut from granite. Of the 63 local men who enlisted for service in the Boer War, mostly serving as mounted troopers, five lost their lives.

Four white marble plaques inset with lead lettering are fixed to the front, back and sides of the base. The plaque on the eastern face has a roll of honour which lists the five Queanbeyan volunteers who died, while the plaque on the southern face records the battles in which Australian units fought in South Africa.

The memorial originally stood in the town's centre, at the intersection of Crawford and Monaro Streets. The column was originally surmounted by a lamp which ran on vapour gas supplied from a large tank beneath the roadway. This lamp lit the town's main intersection at night. In 1956 the memorial was knocked over by a wayward truck. It was repaired using as much of the original material as possible and re-erected in Lowe Street. Around 2022, the memorial was moved again to its current position in Moore Park. The park is the venue for Remembrance Day services.
