Round Swamp District Great War Roll of Honour Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This roll of honour is made of Australian Oak, with the inscription and names painted in gold. The roll lists 10 soliders, including A.J. McMillian who paid the supreme sacrifice. The memorial demonstrates the skill of the craftsman with its distinctive carving of the Rising Sun at the top, and gum leaves and gum nuts surrounding the names. The memorial was dedicated in the Round Swamp community on Sunday 20 April 1919 by Reverend Riley. On 22 April 1919, The Daily Observer (Tamworth) described the roll and dedication service in detail. On each side of the board, a wreath of chrysanthemums was hung in honor of McMillan, and the hall was decorated with flowers, ferns and flags. It was also reported the roll was made by a returned soldier. Round Swamp was a small rural community near Walcha. The School of Arts hall was erected by August 1907. The former Round Swamp Public Hall and site, located in the Parish Andy and County Vernon, was offered for sale by auction on 22 June 1978. The roll was moved to the Walcha Memorial Ex-Services Club. Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the club.
